Settlements In Space
ECLIPSE kicked off the year with an exciting seminar by Shashank Tippanavar, an iMTech 2022 student who had worked on a research project related to space habitation before joining IIIT-B.
About the Talk
The seminar was designed for anyone fascinated by the idea of humanity extending its reach beyond Earth — covering the science, engineering challenges, and long-term vision behind permanent settlements in space.
Shashank drew on his own prior research to walk attendees through:
- The fundamental challenges of sustaining human life off-planet
- The engineering requirements for habitat design in low gravity and vacuum environments
- Current and near-future missions that are laying the groundwork for deep-space habitation
- The role students and young engineers can play in this rapidly evolving field
Why It Mattered
This was one of ECLIPSE’s first events of the academic year, and it set the tone for the club’s mission: making space science accessible, personal, and inspiring. Hearing from a fellow student — rather than a distant expert — made the subject feel achievable and immediate.
The session was well-attended by students curious about space travel, exploration, and the long arc of human civilization beyond Earth.
Organized by ECLIPSE Astronomy Club, IIIT Bangalore.
